Visiting Scholars & Students

Emory accepts visiting students year-round to rotate with the Department of Neurosurgery.  For upcoming fourth year medical students who wish to spend a month with our department, we encourageVisiting Students you to apply through the Visiting Student Application System, which is open for submission in early spring.  We accept four students per month during July through October, prior to interviews.  Students are selected for rotation based on the same qualifications used to determine match ranking (except for letters of recommendation and interview).

Students selected for rotation will spend two weeks at Emory University Hospital, one week at Emory University Hospital – Midtown, and one week at Grady Memorial Hospital.  If desired, additional time will be provided to observe and rotate at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Egleston or Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Scottish Rite.

Visiting students are expected to do the following:

  • See patients every day with the junior residents
  • Attend all operative cases
  • Scrub in when appropriate
  • Be present at all resident conferences
  • Take call with residents as time permits

In addition, each student is required to present either a case report or their own research at Neurosurgery Grand Rounds during their rotation.  Students are expected to be an active part of the Neurosurgery team at each hospital and should attempt to serve in the same capacity as first year residents while on service.

Prior experience on a Neurosurgery service as a student is not required to rotate, but students should come with a solid foundation of neurosurgical knowledge and an understanding of basic procedures and operations.
