Erwin G. Van Meir, PhD is a Professor of Neurosurgery and Hematology/ Oncology at the Emory University School of Medicine and Director of the Winship Cancer Institute's Brain Tumor Program and Laboratory of Molecular Neuro-Oncology. Dr Van Meir has extensive experience in cancer research. He was trained in molecular biology at the Universities of Fribourg and Lausanne, Switzerland where he obtained his PhD in 1989. He pursued postdoctoral work at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in San Diego where he uncovered the role of p53 in the negative regulation of glioma angiogenesis, thus extending our conception of p53 as an intrinsic cellular regulator to one with more global control over the cellular environment. He joined the Faculty of Emory University in Atlanta, in 1998.
Dr Van Meir and his colleagues have made several original contributions to cancer research. His research is mainly directed at defining the genetic alterations in brain tumors, determining their biological significance for tumor development, with particular emphasis on angiogenesis and hypoxia, and translating this knowledge into new therapeutic approaches. These advances showed that loss of p53 tumor suppressor function contributes to the early stages of astrocytoma formation in humans.
Contributions in the field of tumor angiogenesis include the demonstration that hypoxia can both increase the production of pro-angiogenic factors as well as reduce the production of inhibitors of angiogenesis and tumor growth, as well as the discovery of Vasculostatin, a fragment of Brain Angiogenesis Inhibitor 1 with a unique angiostatic and tumor prevention role in the brain.
Dr Van Meir's group recently proposed a novel mechanism to explain the development of hypoxia in malignant brain tumors based on vaso-occlusive and regression events; mechanisms that are relevant to angiogenesis and more aggressive tumor growth. His recent research efforts are focused on the development of novel therapies to treat hypoxic tumor cells. These efforts have led to the development of a novel oncolytic adenovirus that targets hypoxic cells, as well as the development of novel small molecules interfering with the Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF) pathway.
Dr Van Meir is an active member of the International Neuro-Oncology community. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Society for Neuro-Oncology and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation, has served on the Scientific Committee of the European Association for Neuro-Oncology and has organized several international conferences on brain tumors. He is a member of several international cancer societies and serves on the Editorial Board or as a reviewer for over 30 international scientific journals and reviews scientific proposals for public and private agencies including the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US Department of Defense, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Cancer Society, the Wellcome Trust of the UK, the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, the Israel Science Foundation and the Italian Association for Cancer Research. His research, supported by the NIH, the SNSF and many private foundations is described in more than 100 peer-reviewed international scientific publications that have cumulated over 3000 citations. He is also the author of several US and foreign patents. These contributions were presented in over 100 invited seminars worldwide and have furthered the understanding of brain tumor biology and genetics as well as led to the development novel preclinical therapeutic approaches.
